Cassie: The Art She Gave Us

Cassie: The Art She Gave Us

The Art She Gave Us celebrates the artwork of Cassie Swanson and recognises the enduring contribution that both Cassie and Geoff Swanson have made to the Grassland Art Gallery and the wider Tambo community.

This exhibition marks Cassie Swanson’s first solo exhibition and brings together a remarkable collection of works generously lent by family, friends and collectors, many of which were originally purchased at Grasslands over the years. These sit alongside more intimate works from the artist’s own collection, including portraits of family members and grandchildren, offering visitors an insight into Cassie’s life and artistic practice.

Working predominantly in watercolour, Cassie demonstrated an exceptional ability to achieve depth, richness and emotion through a delicate medium. Her confident use of colour and form brings warmth and vitality to each piece. The exhibition also includes works in acrylics, mixed media and oils, highlighting Cassie’s versatility and willingness to explore different techniques. Subject matter ranges from expressive bird studies and sweeping rural landscapes to beautifully detailed floral works, each reflecting Cassie’s strong connection to people, place and the natural world.

Beyond the artworks themselves, The Art She Gave Us honours the significant role Cassie and Geoff played in shaping the Grassland Art Gallery. Cassie was involved from the gallery’s inception, working with Council to ensure the space was fit for purpose and a true gallery. She coordinated local artists’ exhibitions, organised workshops, hung countless exhibitions and warmly hosted opening nights that welcomed artists and visitors alike.

Geoff was a constant and enthusiastic supporter of these endeavours. Often found behind the scenes, he helped hang exhibitions, proofread gallery programs and supported events with good humour and quiet dedication. Together, their generosity, creativity and commitment helped establish Grasslands as a vibrant cultural hub.

This exhibition is both a celebration of Cassie’s artistic legacy and a fitting tribute to two individuals whose love of the arts has left a lasting mark on Grasslands Art Gallery and the community it serves.
