Sisterly Splashes

Sisters in Art: A Celebration of Colour and Creativity

Tambo is being treated to a vibrant and diverse art exhibition by sisters Wendy Keen and Ange Humphries, bringing their bold, abstract works to the Grassland Art Gallery. Though both have been painting for years for mainly personal enjoyment, their styles and artistic journeys are unique, shaped by their experiences, passions, and perspectives.

Wendy, a familiar face to many in Tambo, splits her time between here and Lake Argyle, Western Australia, where she teaches yoga—a passion that mirrors her artistic approach. She loves experimenting with different techniques, colours, and textures, drawing inspiration from her travels and the world around her. Wendy’s obvious love of colour is showcased in her paintings.

Ange, who lives west of Moree on a broadacre farm with her husband and son, has always been drawn to the expressive freedom of abstract art. Initially painting to decorate spaces in her home, she found that abstract works had a timeless appeal, remaining fresh and engaging in a way that more traditional representations did not. Some of her pieces feature strong geometric lines and shapes, while others take on entirely different forms.

Both artists embrace a completely spontaneous approach to their work, never knowing where a painting will take them. Often, only a tiny snippet of the original markings remain visible in the final piece. Their colour palettes shift with each painting, often bright and energetic, but the style of one piece can be worlds apart from the next. Music, mood and energy play a big role in how each work evolves, making every piece a reflection of the moment in which it was created. Constantly learning and experimenting gives them both the freedom and confidence to try new things and take each piece in new and varying directions.

Growing up in the Moree area, Wendy and Ange’s lives took very different directions, but their connection remained strong. When Wendy had her children, Simon and Rachael, just three years after Ange was born, Ange became deeply involved in their lives. She spent every school holiday at Wendy’s house, and over the years, Simon and Rachel felt more like a brother and sister to her than a niece and nephew. While Ange later pursued university and travel, and Wendy’s journey took her across Australia and beyond, their bond—both personal and artistic—never faded.

Despite their 16-year age gap, Wendy and Ange share an incredibly close bond. They love each other’s company, share similar tastes in music, and are often drawn to the same styles of art. Their mother, an incredible woman who encouraged them to follow their interests, take risks, and enjoy life to the fullest, instilled in them a deep appreciation for creativity and adventure—something that now shines through in their art.

Both artists are thrilled to be sharing their work with the Tambo community in such a vibrant gallery space. Tambo is home to a growing and passionate art community, and they are excited to be able to add their voices to it.
