A Little Pot of Gold Shines at the Grassland Art Gallery
The Grassland Art Gallery came alive on the evening of Friday, April 17, as a large crowd of friends, family and community members gathered to celebrate the opening of the latest exhibition, The Most Magnificent Pot of Gold. The enthusiastic turnout reflected the pride the community felt in supporting two creative talents behind the newly published children’s book The Most Magnificent Pot of Gold.
Written by local author Kiralee Sanderson and beautifully illustrated by Georgina Hart, the book has already captured hearts with its whimsical storytelling and vivid artwork. Both Kiralee and Georgina spoke during the opening evening, sharing the inspiration and process behind the collaboration.
Kiralee, herself a visual artist and the busy mother of four young daughters, explained how the book began during a period when she was searching for a new creative outlet. Painting, she admitted, was not proving to be a relaxing activity when accompanied by enthusiastic “little helpers.” Instead, she turned to writing.
The story slowly took shape during quiet moments late at night when the house was finally still and her daughters were asleep. Kiralee typed the words into her phone, building the book piece by piece in those rare pockets of calm at the end of full family days.
She described the project as a form of self-care. Having stepped away from teaching as her usual profession, working towards a creative goal and completing it helped her maintain balance and purpose in this new phase of life. Just as importantly, it allowed her to model creativity and perseverance for her daughters, her own “most magnificent pot of gold.”
Those daughters, Megan, Jacqui, Annabel and Olivia, also appear within the story itself, adding a deeply personal element to the book.
For illustrator Georgina Hart, this made the project both a privilege and a responsibility. Georgina, who has previously exhibited at the Grassland Art Gallery, spoke about the honour of being entrusted with bringing Kiralee’s story to visual life.
Because the story included Kiralee’s children, she felt a strong sense of responsibility in ensuring that each of them was reflected thoughtfully within the illustrations.
“Illustration is slow work,” Georgina explained, noting that each painting took between one and two weeks to complete. The process required careful attention to detail, emotion and character to capture the spirit of the story.
She described the creative partnership beautifully.
“A book is a collaboration, a conversation between two imaginations. Kiralee wrote her words and I read them, and somewhere between her imagination and my interpretation, the paintings were born. Neither of us could have made this alone. That is the magic of it.”
The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the story in a visual and immersive manner. Each artwork displayed throughout the gallery brings the pages of the book to life, with Georgina’s original illustrations arranged to guide viewers through the narrative from beginning to end. As visitors move through the space, they follow the story page by page, discovering the colour, movement and imagination that shaped the finished publication.
The opening night was filled with warmth, laughter and celebration, as guests gathered to congratulate the creative pair and enjoy the sense of community pride surrounding the project.
The Most Magnificent Pot of Gold will be on display until the beginning of June.
